It couldn’t have been a more beautiful spring wedding day this past Saturday when Maari and Jason said “I do”. As I pulled up to La Belle Vie I noticed another wedding party and guests spilling out onto the steps of St Mark’s, everyone smiling, dresses bright, suits handsome and flowers everywhere. Moving into the lobby at 510 Groveland the flowers from Summer Harsh were sumptuous, the palest shades of pink peonies the inspiration for the gumpaste floral accent on the cake. Maari’s gorgeous dress was the work of local designer Tara LaTour. I pulled details of lace and fabric both in color and placement to create elegance

Three Pretty Princesses

The second cake for Jenny last Saturday was for 3 little girls and no surprise we created a princess themed cake. A classic story I am sure needs no introduction if one looks at the details. A careful step away from licensing concerns but identifiable none the less. I just noticed the we have 3 little mice for 3 little girls.
I wrapped this one up in water proof plastic since the pick up time coincided with a heavy downpour.

A Budding Author

Jenny and I worked together a couple of months ago so the ease of putting together 2 cakes for multiple birthdays was a breeze. 3 girls and a boy had birth dates close enough together that it was decided a really big party with a couple of cakes was perfect. My family does this as well. A big party, lots of candles and desserts or cakes that fit the birthday folks desires.

This birthday boy has read and liked Eragon but plans to start writing his own, even better stories. Write on!

Out of the Mouths of Babes

I think Culler might be my youngest client to date. He came to visit me with his mom, dad and younger brother to talk about his birthday cake. Culler is 4. Couldn’t ask for a cuter client and he loves race cars. He was definite about the blue for his name, flavors he accepted some prompting from his parents. His brother was too excited about his ability to run around to pay any attention. Did I mention cute? Culler came with his dad to pick up his cake on Saturday and was just about tall enough to look into the box. He said I did a good job and I got an “oh, ooh” for the tires.

Combined Cultures

This birthday cake combined two cultures, Hmong and Korean. We started several weeks ahead to allow time to find images, discuss flavors and find the best way to incorporate the style and aesthetics of both worlds.The Korean side is more floral and multi hued, the Hmong focused more on texture and fabric. It’s impossible to include every detail on such a small figure, but the doll on top mirrored the side by side influences of both parents for this little girl.

Just Add Sirens

This birthday boy loves fire trucks. I have made fire trucks before, some from toy trucks, some from photographs taken at the fire station so we could be as realistic as possible.

This cake was for a little boy, the guest count wasn’t too large so I emphasized the toy aspect by compressing the trucks details and dimensions. I think it is very cute and Hayden had a great birthday.

The Gift of Oysters

Another animal lover celebrated a birthday recently. Favorite animal: the sea otter. Friendly, playful and fun to wrap up in fondant kelp. Add some buttercream waves and an oyster on his belly and, voila, it’s a party cake.

Celebrating a Golden Birthday

This was a very literal interpretation of celebrating a golden birthday: your age matches the date of your birth.

The client for this celebration was planning a blow out party for his wife and wanted to really push the whole concept of the tradition. What better way than cake made to look like gold ingots. We added cupcakes adorned with golden coins but that photo is still in my phone refusing to be transferred to my mac. Think ancient gold coins nestled in fluffy buttercream, sparkling and pretty.

Trend Forward

These cupcakes were my experimental batch of rainbow hued cake for an order in May. Very trend forward, this party will be fun and I am hoping to get some great shots from the cake and candy table once it happens.

Until then, think rainbow inspired cake layers with frosting just between them so the pretty colors show top to bottom.

Classic Star Wars

One of those big birthdays is being celebrated today. You know the ones that start a decade. That means that Corey acutally remembers watching the first Star Wars trilogy in a theater, not via VHS or DVD at home. Per his wife’s request the cake included Chewbaca and Darth Vader, I added the Death Star, the Millenium Falcon and the fight scene between Obi Wan Kenobi and Darth because they are rather iconic. Chewy gets to observe as a bit of creative license.

I wish I knew how to write out Darth Vader’s breathing anomaly…it would make a great Happy Birthday sound effect.
